What is Highland Dancing?

Highland dancing is a competitive, solo dance style with Scottish origins, combining elements of traditional Gaelic folk dancing and ballet. Emerging in the 19th and 20th centuries, it showcases intricate footwork and movement performed in traditional kilts. Key dances include the Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Seann Triubhas, and Strathspey & Reel. Known for its physical demands, highland dancing requires agility, strength, stamina, and artistry. Aspiring dancers dedicate years to mastering its techniques through performances and competitions.

The dancers typically take lessons independently at other dance studios in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver, and many of them also compete in Highland Dance competitions under those schools.
